A sublime study in restraint and honest craftsmanship, this rare 19th-century Swedish tilt-top supper table embodies the quiet poetry of Scandinavian vernacular furniture.
The perfectly round, planked top crafted from old-growth pine displays a beautiful, sun-bleached patina with worm traces, nail holes, and age cracks that speak to over a century of use – the authentic wabi-sabi character designers covet and cannot replicate. The top tilts ingeniously on its original brass latch and wooden pin mechanism, supported by a birdcage of turned spindles – a hallmark of true 19th-century construction.
The baluster-turned pedestal rises from a sculptural tripod of cabriole legs with elongated pad feet, offering both grace and remarkable stability. The entire piece has been stripped to a soft, honey-blonde Scandinavian finish, highlighting the rich grain and movement of the pine.
This versatile form served as a supper table, wine table, or occasional table in Swedish farmhouses. Today, it is the perfect side table for a primary bedroom, between Gustavian armchairs, or as a sculptural accent in a Belgian-linen living room.
