The oak has been carefully stripped to reveal the natural grain, mellow color, and remarkable depth of the carving.
Bold lion mascarons appear throughout the design, serving as the principal decorative motif and symbolizing strength, dignity, and guardianship. They emerge from the cornice, supporting brackets, friezes, and lower paneled doors, surrounded by deeply carved acanthus leaves, scrolling foliage, floral details, fruit, rosettes, and classical ornament. The abundance and precision of the carving reflect the work of highly skilled French cabinetmakers inspired by the grand interiors and decorative traditions of the French Renaissance.
The upper cabinet is crowned by a richly carved projecting cornice and fitted with two arched glazed doors. Carved borders frame the glass, while the interior shelves provide an elegant setting for antique books, collections, porcelain, or treasured decorative objects. Below, the substantial lower cabinet offers generous storage behind two elaborately carved doors centered with prominent lion heads.
