Antique English Metamorphic Chair
The hinged back flips down and a perfectly functional set of steps appears where a chair was sitting a moment before. That's the whole trick of the metamorphic library chair, and it's one that British and European craftsmen had been refining since the early 1800s. By the time this pine example was made, around 1920, the design had been well-proven across a century of country houses, rectories, and working libraries.
The metamorphic chair grew out of a broader tradition of clever, space-saving furniture that became popular in Georgian and Regency England. Cabinetmakers were designing pieces that could do two jobs without looking like they were trying too hard. This pine version sits within that same practical tradition, though its honest construction and unfussy form put it closer to the farmhouse kitchen than the gentleman's library.
Dimensions: W 20" D 15" H 25"
Origin: England
Circa Date: 1920
Condition: The warm pine has aged well, with the kind of patina that only comes from a hundred years of actual use. There is wear consistent with age, which adds to the character rather than detracting from it. The hinge mechanism works as it should.
Works well in a kitchen, a study, a boot room, or anywhere that could use an extra seat and occasionally needs a step up to a high shelf. It also holds its own as a display piece for anyone drawn to functional antiques with a bit of history behind them.
