A wonderful French art deco pendant light in nickeled bronze or solid brass*). The gorgeous mount holds a globe in clear frosted molded-pressed glass. It is signed Cherrier & Besnus. This model globe exists unsigned as well. It is unknown which glass factory produced these shades. But Cherrier et Besnus ordered them with their own signature placed in acid near the collar.
The pendant was made by the Paris France based company in bronze lighting fixtures Cherrier et Besnus. In 1926 monsieur E.Cherrier and monsieur Besnus took over the company of Roger Massin at 36 rue Amelot street. Massin produced bronze lighting in a neo-classical and art nouveau style. Cherrier et Besnus continued the production of these Massin products as well as introduced new designs in art deco style. They opened a second larger workshop in Choisy. The art deco lamps of Cherrier & Besnus are well made items of excellent quality. The bronze parts of their fixtures are often stamped with the foundry initials RM (for Roger Massin).
The pendant has a height of 59 cm (23-1/4 inches) and the globe has a diameter of about 26 cm (10-1/4"). It is in excellent condition. I have re-nickeled and patinated the mount. And the fixture is rewired with an American standard socket.

*) In fact what we call bronze or brass nowadays is very precisely defined by the percentage of metals used for the mixture. In the old product catalogs of the 1930s lighting firms the fixtures are always described as bronze. Yet the exact description for the "bronze" used for French art deco lamps in the 30s would be to talk about cast solid copper alloy. See less
