An exquisite early 20th-century Japanese Satsuma-style porcelain basket vase featuring exceptionally rich, high-relief moriage (raised slip work) decoration and hand-painted figurative vignettes.
Formed with a crescent-cut top handle and a diamond-shaped pedestal foot, this vessel showcases intricate artisanal craftsmanship from every angle. The front and reverse panels depict traditional seated figures framed by stylized floral borders, heavy enamel slip-beading, and gold gilt accents against a deep rust-red field. The sides are decorated with bold, raised polychrome floral scrollwork in shades of sage green, powder blue, and blush pink.
Era & Attribution Notes
Estimated Era: Early 20th Century (c. 1910s – 1930s / Late Meiji to Taisho/Early Showa Period)
Why We Believe It Was Made Then:
Moriage Technique & Palette: The heavy, three-dimensional enamel slip (moriage) and deep rust-red grounding were popular hallmarks of Japanese art ceramics produced for domestic display and fine export during the early 1900s through the 1930s.
Base & Markings: The unglazed, flat-cut diamond foot shows natural aging, fine darkening, and precise hand-trimming typical of hand-thrown and mold-formed ceramics of this period.
Hand-Painted Details: The delicate facial features and individual enamel dotting show clear evidence of individual hand-application rather than mid-century mass-production transfer methods.
