This is a petite antique French folding screen in a Louis XVI style from the 1900's — three hinged giltwood … Read more This is a petite antique French folding screen in a Louis XVI style from the 1900's  — three hinged giltwood leaves, each glazed over a small pastoral engraving and finished below with a panel of striped floral silk brocade. The three prints reproduce plates from a well-loved 18th-century French series, The Four Seasons, engraved by Jean Daullé after François Boucher. Only three of the original four seasons appear here; the Summer plate is not included.

Construction and design notes:

Three-leaf folding screen joined with dark-finished metal butterfly hinges

Carved giltwood frame with a bead-and-reel top rail on each leaf

Each leaf pairs a glazed monochrome pastoral engraving above a lower panel of striped cream silk brocade woven with rose and olive florals

The three engravings have been identified as Les Amusements de l'Hiver, Les Délices de l'Automne, and Les Charmes du Printemps — plates from a Four Seasons suite engraved by Jean Daullé (1703–1763), "Graveur du Roy," after François Boucher, originally dedicated to Madame de Pompadour.

Flat measurements, each leaf: 37"H x 14"W x 2"D (94 x 35.6 x 5.1 cm).

Image size within each glazed frame: approximately 10" x 12" (25.4 x 30.5 cm). Overall width with all three leaves open flat: approximately 42" (106.7 cm).

The gilt carries the soft, expected wear of handling over the decades, with light rubbing to the high points of the carving. Every pane of glass over the prints is intact, with no cracks.

Looking at the backs of the panels, there is scattered foxing and tan water staining on the paper lining, the kind that comes from age and a damp storage spell at some point in its life. The gilding shows light rubbing on the raised carving, and every pane of glass is intact and uncracked. See less
