A finely turned ceremonial gavel fashioned from polished organic material, comprising a substantial double-faced head joined to a long, tapering handle terminating in a spherical finial. Concentric moldings articulate the head and handle junction, lending the object the formal symmetry and visual authority associated with lodge furnishings and officers’ regalia.
One striking face is engraved with a compact arrangement of Masonic working tools, most plausibly incorporating the plumb, level, and compasses. The opposite face is engraved with a single plumb or plumb rule. Within Masonic symbolism, the plumb represents moral rectitude and upright conduct; the level signifies equality and fraternity; and the compasses embody restraint, discipline, and the proper regulation of one’s actions. The repetition of the plumb on the opposing face gives particular emphasis to integrity and ethical constancy.
The object was likely intended for ceremonial use by a presiding lodge officer, where the gavel functioned as both an instrument of order and an emblem of constituted authority. Its turned construction, restrained ornamental vocabulary, polished surface, and finely incised symbolic decoration are consistent with specialized Masonic objects produced during the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.
