A rare and characterful late 17th-century Flemish Baroque oak tavern table dating to circa 1680–1700, retaining its original hand-crafted base.
Constructed using traditional pegged mortise and tenon joinery, the table stands on elegantly turned supports united by a substantial central stretcher terminating in beautifully carved horn-shaped ends, one of the defining characteristics of Flemish Baroque furniture of the late 17th century. The heavy block shoe feet display centuries of honest wear, while the rich patina and hand-worked surfaces reflect generations of careful use.
At some point during its long history, the original top was sympathetically replaced with an antique solid oak plank top, almost certainly during the 18th or 19th century. This was a common historic repair for heavily used tavern furniture and allows the table to remain both highly usable and historically honest.
Compact in scale, the table is perfectly suited as a side table, hall table, console or occasional table, making it an ideal choice for both period and contemporary interiors where authentic early furniture provides warmth and character.
with its sculptural silhouette, exceptional craftsmanship and remarkable age, this is a striking example of surviving Flemish Baroque furniture that is both decorative and practical.
Presented in very good antique condition with a wonderful, honest surface developed through more than three centuries of use.
The original late 17th-century oak base remains structurally sound, retaining its traditional pegged mortise and tenon construction, beautifully turned supports, sculptural horn-shaped stretcher terminals and substantial shoe feet. The timber displays rich patination, historic tool marks, shrinkage and age-related wear consistent with its age.
The replacement top is reflected in the asking price and does not detract from the table's decorative appeal or functionality.
Overall the table is sturdy, practical and ready for everyday use while retaining exceptional historical character.
