Linden mid century beech armchair by g. A. Jenkins for eric lyons | restored & re-upholstered | circa 1950s
a beautifully restored linden mid century armchair, designed by g. A. Jenkins for the celebrated architect and designer eric lyons, dating from the 1950s. An enduring icon of post-war british furniture design, this elegant armchair perfectly captures the clean lines, organic curves and functional beauty that defined mid century modern furniture.
this exceptional example has been professionally restored and completely re-upholstered by ourselves to our usual high standard, creating a chair that honours its heritage whilst feeling perfectly suited to contemporary interiors. The newly upholstered seat features a premium quality geometric fabric in warm mustard, soft grey, taupe and ivory tones, adding a fresh mid century aesthetic that complements the natural warmth of the timber beautifully.
the chair is crafted from solid beech, with one of its most distinctive features being the elegant steam-bent beech backrest. The gently curved top rail flows seamlessly into the outer frame, whilst the beautifully sculpted vertical bentwood spindles create a wonderfully light and architectural appearance. The gracefully sweeping arms continue into gently tapering front legs, giving the chair a wonderfully balanced silhouette from every angle.
designed during britain's post-war design renaissance, this chair reflects the philosophy of eric lyons, whose work championed simple, honest design that combined beauty with practicality. Lyons became one of britain's most influential designers and architects, creating furniture and homes that embraced modern living without sacrificing craftsmanship. Working alongside g. A. Jenkins, these designs became highly regarded for their elegant proportions, quality construction and timeless appeal.
the importance of this design is reflected by the fact that examples of the linden chair are held within the collections of the victoria and albert museum, recognising its significance in the history of british twentieth-century furniture design.
having been fully restored by ourselves, the timber has been carefully refinished to enhance the beautiful natural grain of the beech, whilst preserving the crisp lines and sculptural form of the original design. The result is a chair presented in exceptional condition, ready to be enjoyed for decades to come.
whether placed as an occasional chair in a living room, bedroom, reading corner or study, this piece effortlessly combines comfort with timeless mid century style. Its sculptural frame and striking geometric upholstery make it an eye-catching statement piece whilst remaining understated enough to complement both contemporary and vintage interiors.
for interior designers, this is an authentic investment piece that would sit beautifully within residential projects, boutique hotels, executive offices, luxury apartments or stylish hospitality spaces. Its recognised design pedigree, museum provenance and refined craftsmanship make it a highly desirable addition to any thoughtfully curated interior.
