A charming two-tone terracotta water jug, an authentic and emblematic piece of folk art and utilitarian pottery from the south of france (provence/languedoc region), dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.
this piece is distinguished by its traditional structure: a rounded shape with a raw, unglazed lower section, highlighting the natural, matte texture of the red clay, which contrasts elegantly with the upper section covered in a superb, bright yellow glaze, luminous and subtly flamed.
originally highly functional, this water jug acted as a natural temperature regulator, keeping water cool thanks to the micro-evaporation from its unglazed base.
completely handmade by an artisan, these jugs are now used as decorative objects.
it retains all of its original features:
a very sturdy basket-style handle, designed for easy carrying.
a small, short, streamlined spout (sometimes called a bottle or bottle neck) for drinking "à l'régale" (without touching the spout with your lips) or for precise pouring.
a small side handle provides stability when serving.
a matching removable terracotta lid with a small knob for gripping is a welcome addition, as these are often lost over time.
with its organic lines and warm, earthy tones, this antique piece blends seamlessly into contemporary interiors.
it will perfectly complement a provençal, country, chalet, bohemian, or minimalist style, seeking the authentic charm that antique objects provide.
a timeless classic in interior design.
condition: excellent overall condition.
the yellow glaze has a beautiful shine and a healthy patina. Note a slight chip, but considering its age, this lovely antique piece is very well preserved.
