Native to the tropical forests of southeast asia, this highly prized fruit tree has been cultivated for centuries throughout indonesia, malaysia, thailand and the philippines. The sweet, translucent flesh is renowned for its delicate flavor, making it one of the region's most cherished tropical fruits. The composition illustrates a fruiting branch bearing clusters of ripening langsat together with botanical details of the fruit and seeds. Executed with remarkable scientific accuracy and artistic elegance, the plate perfectly captures the subtle beauty of this important tropical species. The artwork was painted from life by the renowned dutch botanical artist berthe hoola van nooten (1817–1892) while living on the island of java. Her celebrated publication, fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de l'ile de java, is regarded as one of the finest nineteenth-century botanical works devoted to the extraordinary flora of the dutch east indies. This plate was printed in vibrant chromolithography by p. De pannemaeker of ghent and published in the third edition issued in brussels by librairie européenne c. Muquardt around 1880. Today, langsat remains one of southeast asia's most beloved indigenous fruits and is closely associated with the tropical orchards of indonesia and malaysia. Its rarity outside the region makes this print particularly appealing to collectors of botanical art and tropical fruit illustrations. This is an original antique print, printed circa 1880, and not a modern reproduction or later copy.
