This beautiful plate was painted from nature by the renowned botanical artist Berthe Hoola van Nooten and published in the third edition of Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de la Flore et de la Pomone de l'Ile de Java, issued by G. Severeyns in Brussels around 1880. The composition portrays a graceful fruiting branch laden with clusters of Winged Lychee fruits alongside its delicate flowering racemes and detailed botanical studies of the fruit and cross-section. The warm reddish-brown fruits, elegant pendulous branches and lush tropical foliage create a refined and highly decorative composition that beautifully represents the extraordinary flora of Java. Although closely related to the lychee, rambutan and longan, Otophora alata is a much rarer member of the Sapindaceae family. Native to Indonesia, Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia, it remains relatively unknown outside its natural range, making this print especially desirable for collectors of tropical botanical art and rare fruit illustrations. Berthe Hoola van Nooten's botanical illustrations are celebrated for combining scientific accuracy with remarkable artistic elegance. Painted from living specimens in Batavia (present-day Jakarta), her work was reproduced using the advanced chromolithographic process, producing exceptional color richness and subtle tonal gradations that remain among the finest botanical prints of the nineteenth century. Presented unframed. Images showing the print in a frame are for inspiration only. The frame is not included and may not be to scale. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning and minor foxing consistent with age. Please examine the photographs carefully.
