Set of 10 original limited edition lithographs on vellum parchment by Agnes Martin. Two folio envelopes. Unframed. 1990s. Edition of 2500.
This suite of ten lithographs demonstrate Martin's quest for simplicity, seemingly perfectly straight lines, and geometry. Her use of light pale colors and abstract compositions avoids directing the viewer's eye to any one particular spot. The straight lines that run horizontally or vertically suggest a level of perfection, but on closer observation slight imperfections created by the artist's hand are revealed.
Agnes Martin (1912 – 2004)
Agnes Martin was a Canadian-American abstract painter known for her minimalist style and associated with the abstract expressionist movement. Martin moved to the United States in 1931, where she pursued her higher education. Martin's artistic journey began in NYC where she immersed herself in modern art and developed a deep interest in abstraction. Growing up in rural Canada and influenced by the New Mexico desert, where she lived for the last several decades of her life, Martin's art is characterized by serene compositions featuring grids and lines. Her works are predominantly monochromatic, employing colors like black, white, & brown with great subtlety. Martin's minimalist approach conveyed tranquility and spirituality. Despite personal struggles with schizophrenia, Martin's dedication to her art persisted and her legacy continues to inspire contemporary artists. Martin's artistic vision, blending minimalism and spirituality, remains an enduring and influential force in the realm of abstract art.
