wall sconces by Monix & Ets. J. Gauthier
A nice pair of French 1930 art deco wall lights in nickel plated solid brass or bronze holding two beautiful panels in frosted molded-pressed glass. The shades were acid frosted and then polished by hand to create glossy highlights. This model shade is never signed like many other models of the large glass factory of Etablissements Jean Gauthier. The mounts were made by Monix.
"Monix" was the brand name of Les Etablissements Lokiec. The Paris based company (38-40 rue de la Folie Méricourt) of Maxime Lokiec. Maxime Lokiec, from Jewish Polish origin, in the mid 30s changed his name into 'Loquet'. He started his company in bronze lighting devices around 1920. The company closed its doors in 1980. In 1922 a patent was registered for a spring braked ball joint which is used in Monix table lamps. After the war the company re-opened and modernized (higher volumes, cheaper made lamps) and made modernist lamps in pressed brass in a rather impersonal style.
Monix made seven variations of this wall sconce mount. With seven different model EJG shades. See the last picture from the 1930-1931 product poster.
The sconces are 34,2 cm (13.46") high and 17,4 cm (6.85") wide. They project 11,7 cm (4.61") from the wall. Both are in excellent condition. The shades have the usual small chips on the rim where the slip shades glide in the mount. They are hidden by the bronze frames. I have re-nickeled and patinated the mountings. The wall lamps come rewired. I placed American candelabra base sockets.
I have three pairs available.

Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first world war Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in molded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J.Robert pseudonym for J.Gauthier based on the street name of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.
