"Oh! breathe not his name, let it sleep in the shade. Sad, silent & dark, be the tears that we shed. As the night dew that falls on the grass o’er his head!"

These lines are the opening stanza of "Oh! Breathe Not His Name," a famous elegy written by the Irish poet Thomas Moore. The poem was published in his renowned Irish Melodies collection. Moore penned this moving tribute in memory of his close friend, the Irish nationalist Robert Emmet. Emmet was a charismatic leader of the 1803 rebellion in Dublin who was captured and executed for high treason. Legend says he was betrayed and caught because he returned to the city to say goodbye to his fiancée, Sarah Curran.

Measures 6 1/2" diameter x .75". Good condition - minor chips to foot rim on the back does not detract. See less
