It's a rich palette that makes an ideal fit for contemporary kitchens, contrasting with light woods, white oak, maple, or ash. This exceptional, museum-grade art pottery vase has the signature carbonized black finish achieved through an ancient resist-smoke kiln process, with a warm terracotta slip wrapped manually instead of on a modern pottery wheel, rolling the wild, local red clay into long ropes, stacking them in circles, and smoothing them by hand to build the walls. The clay is "coarse," meaning it has a natural, slightly rough texture and an earthy, tactile presence. Originating in the late 20th-century ceramic revival of the 1970s and 1980s, and located in a part of the dry, low-altitude coastal foothills, this signed studio piece represents a pivotal period in which Chulucanas artisans successfully adapted traditional ceremonial techniques for the global fine art market. The Sican Tallán Territory has a low-altitude, arid climate, which is exactly where the ancient Pre-Inca Tallán and Vicús cultures thrived. The local clay and wood resources found at this lower elevation defined Lescano’s specific resist-smoke firing process. The vase is an authentic statement piece for tables or backbars at an upscale Tapas restaurant and pairs beautifully with botanical settings—whether styled alongside fresh, structural green fronds or dried pampas grass on a sunlit console. It beautifully highlights both the Lescano signature motif and the heritage of traditional Incan folk art lineage. See less
