This is a play on words, as the Chinese word for monkey, hóu, sounds like the word for a high-ranking nobleman.
The monkey is holding a prominent, seed-filled lotus pod. In Chinese culture, the numerous seeds in a lotus pod symbolize fertility, abundance and the continuous generation of children (liánshēng guìzǐ). A small bird perches in the foreground, interacting with the scene. Birds often represent joy, good news and harmony in nature. The craggy, porous base represents scholars' rocks or a rocky riverbed where lotus plants grow, grounding the scene in a natural landscape.
The carving is made from Chinese soapstone, also known as steatite or shoushan stone. Soapstone is a talc-rich metamorphic rock prized by carvers because it is soft enough to cut with chisels but durable enough to hold intricate details.
