Vintage English Russell Flint Print: 'A Scrap of Newspaper'
Russell Flint died in December 1969, which means this signed print dates to the very end of his life, or was published posthumously with family approval shortly after. Either way, it comes from the final chapter of a remarkable career that spanned most of the 20th century.
"A Scrap of Newspaper" has its roots in the Provence region of southern France, a landscape that captivated Flint for decades. Sketchbook notes place the scene near an old barn about three miles west of Apt, and the subject carries that quality he returned to again and again: rural life, warm light, and figures caught in an unguarded moment. It was originally published as a decorative calendar print, made simply for the pleasure of the image.
