During the late 1960s and 1970s, the Texas prison system in Huntsville had active recreation and vocational programs, and inmate art was often featured in the famous Texas Prison Rodeo program booklets, local newspapers like the Huntsville Item, or the prison's own newspaper, The Echo. It was likely sold through the Texas Department of Corrections (TDC) handicraft program or at the famous Texas Prison Rodeo. Standard Rodeo Souvenirs: Paintings sold directly to tourists at the Huntsville stadium in the 1970s are highly desirable.
This particular painting was most likely one of those. Known only by the last name and signature "ROARK" and dated 1970, lower right.
We don't know the name of this painting, but we have nicknamed it "Shelter in the Storm". The composition is dominated by a jagged, imposing mountain range that slices horizontally across the canvas. Nestled in the lower foreground, a solitary, small house sits in the shadow of the central mountain peak. The tiny structure is dwarfed by the massive scale of the landscape, emphasizing themes of isolation, survival, and the overwhelming power of nature.
The piece carries a heavy, somber, and brooding atmosphere, captured through a dramatic, stormy mood. Churning, charcoal-grey clouds hang low in the sky, threatening an imminent downpour. Despite the overall darkness, the painting features a striking contrast in light: a small patch of light illuminates and reflects off the stark faces of the mountain range. It's really quite wonderful, and our photos do not do it justice. It comes in its original frame. The painting is a standard 16x20 and the frame is 22x26.
