Since no two pieces ever left the Minnesota factory looking identical, creative impulse is perfectly embodied by pairing this 7" tall set of asymmetric Nemadji vases, featuring tight, hand-created, graphical geometric shapes, and considered "native" art. The name “Nemadji,” an Ojibwe word meaning “left hand,” is a directional term for the region’s river that empties into Lake Superior. While Nemadji is considered a representative of the Southwest style, its origins are in northeastern Minnesota, where it began specializing in industrial brick and some decorative hand-thrown pottery. The newly renamed Nemadji Tile and Pottery Company soon won nationwide acclaim for its decorative tile, primarily used for flooring. Hand-thrown Nemadji pottery became popular after being developed by Danish immigrant Eric Hellman, who introduced the “cold striped” painting process, and his influence on the Nemadji output was massive. Nemadji transitioned away from local red clay toward white industrial clay blends, and changes of ownership and the addition of new product lines, right up until the company’s closing in 2002, are dearly respected for their Native American connection to the location. Early pieces feature arrowhead designs, and from 1980, the word “Nemadji” was included on the stamp, but without any symbol. And from 1980 onward, all stamps featured a symbolic Indian head, titled Indian River. And despite the merchandising of Nemadji pottery and the exploitation of American Indians, the pottery is still sought after today. See less

One has Nemadji Pottery … moreThe two-pot pairing features each in structurally fine condition, sculpted and decorated with a white-clay base. One has Nemadji Pottery stamped within a circle at the bottom and carries an original paper sheet explaining the brand. The other, a later 80s vase, has the Indian head stamp and Indian River title. They sit firmly square with no wobbling. The colors are brilliant, with one in a brilliant blue theme. It appears with a small patch at the top of the factory discoloration in a light-colored area, not affecting its display. less
