This Arts & Crafts-style solid oak and mahogany dining room set, was made by J. K. Rishel Company of Williamsport and Hughesville, Pennsylvania (see photos of shipping labels attached to the table leaf storage box and the pedestal base). My mother purchased this set from an antiques dealer in Kingsland, Georgia during the early 1990s when she collected Arts & Crafts furniture. From Georgia, she moved this set to Tennessee, then to Kentucky, and then to New Mexico. Following her death, my father moved back to Kentucky. A year after he died, I moved the set to where I live in Maryland.
It's a very nice set of antique dining room furniture that would fit in virtually any household. Like many Arts & Crafts pieces, the simple lines of each of the pieces go with just about any other style of furniture. This set would make a great set of furniture for someone who wanted to upgrade from hand-me-down table and chairs. Even if you don't have a formal dining room (my Mom didn't either), this set would work well with the open plan design of many homes or if you have a large eat-in kitchen.
In addition to the pedestal table, this dining room set includes 6 matching chairs (including 1 arm or "captain's" chair) and the original storage box containing 4 matching table leaves, so you can enlarge the round table to make it a larger oval table when you entertain (see photos). Seats on each of the chairs are lightly cushioned and have leather upholstery.
As with many Arts & Crafts-style pieces, some of the horizontal surfaces have "tiger oak" veneer, but each piece is made of solid oak and/or mahogany.

It retains its original finish and its original design. The most significant damage is on the tabletop where 2 small sections of veneer were replaced (see photos). My Mom NEVER wanted to have the table refinished or re-veenered. Instead, she thought that these slight flaws to the top added to the overall character of her dining room set, which was one of her most prized antiques. There are also some dings in the tabletop and 2 water rings. less
