Each work bears Rockwell’s plate signature, as issued. Together, the three illustrations capture the humor, mischief, discipline, and warmth at the heart of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

The images were originally created for the 1936 Heritage Press edition of Twain’s novel. Publisher George Macy invited Rockwell to illustrate both Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, projects that particularly suited the artist’s gift for narrative storytelling and vividly observed American characters.

Rockwell approached the assignment with unusual commitment. To better understand the physical world behind Twain’s stories, he traveled to Hannibal, Missouri, studying the town, landscape, architecture, and atmosphere firsthand. That research is reflected in the immediacy of these scenes, where every gesture, expression, and small detail contributes to the story.

The illustrations were later issued as limited fine-art prints using the collotype process, a specialized photomechanical technique prized for its exceptional tonal range, painterly detail, and subtle surface texture. These are not modern posters or standard offset reproductions.

The collotypes were printed in Austria by Arthur Jaffe Heliochrome and distributed in the United States by Circle Gallery. The numbered impressions were issued in an edition of 200, accompanied by a smaller group of Artist Proofs and Roman-numeral proofs.

Dead Cat — Artist Proof
A classic scene of Tom and Huck absorbed in the mysterious possibilities of a dead cat, rendered with Rockwell’s characteristic humor and understanding of childhood imagination.

This example is an Artist Proof, hand-designated “A.P.” in pencil and plate-signed within the image. The original Circle Fine Art label remains attached to the reverse, and the embossed Circle Gallery blind stamp is present.

The Caning — 7/200
One of the most animated compositions in the suite, The Caning captures a classroom punishment at the dramatic peak of the action. The startled expressions, exaggerated movement, and carefully staged composition demonstrate Rockwell’s ability to combine humor, tension, and narrative detail within a single scene.

Medicine / Aunt Polly Giving Tom Sawyer Medicine — 7/200
A richly colored domestic scene depicting Aunt Polly administering medicine to a reluctant Tom, with a watchful cat adding another layer of humor. Rockwell transforms the moment into a vivid character study through the figures’ expressions, gestures, and interplay.

Presentation:
All three works were professionally framed together as a coordinated suite and retain their matching warm brown wood frames, cream matting, and green-and-gold inner detailing.

Displayed in a row, the trio creates a substantial and visually cohesive vignette suited to a library, study, traditional hallway, den, sitting room, executive office, or literary and illustration-art collection.

Condition:
Good vintage condition overall. All three collotypes retain strong color, and the principal printed image areas present cleanly through the plexiglass.

Minor age-related waviness or undulation is visible along portions of the lower paper margins, most apparent under angled light, without materially affecting the central printed images. The vintage frames show scattered surface wear, rubbing, small nicks, and areas of finish loss consistent with age and long-term display. The most noticeable frame wear is along the lower rail of Dead Cat. The coordinated matting remains attractive.

Provenance:
From a private Somis, California estate, where the broader Tom Sawyer collection was displayed together for many years along a hallway leading to a guest wing. The works have remained together in their coordinated vintage framing.
