First Smoke depicts Huck Finn introducing Tom Sawyer and Joe Harper to the forbidden ritual of smoking. Rockwell captures the moment with his characteristic warmth and narrative precision: Huck appears thoroughly pleased with himself, while his companions discover that their first experience with tobacco is not nearly as glamorous as anticipated. The animated expressions, relaxed poses, and carefully observed details transform a small episode of childhood mischief into a wonderfully engaging American genre scene.

Originally created for the 1936 Heritage Press edition of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the illustration was later issued as a limited fine-art collotype. This example was printed in Austria by Arthur Jaffe Heliochrome, Vienna, and distributed in the United States by Circle Gallery.

Collotype is a specialized printing process prized for its ability to reproduce subtle tonal transitions, painterly texture, and exceptionally fine detail. This work belongs to a deliberately produced limited fine-art edition rather than a modern decorative poster or standard offset reproduction.

This impression is hand-numbered 7/200 in pencil at the lower left and bears Rockwell’s plate signature at the lower right.

A Story Behind the Art:
When publisher George Macy invited Rockwell to illustrate Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, the artist approached the project with particular enthusiasm. To better understand the physical world behind Twain’s stories, Rockwell traveled to Hannibal, Missouri, studying the town, landscape, architecture, and atmosphere firsthand.

That commitment to authenticity is especially evident in First Smoke. The boys’ gestures and expressions feel immediate and believable, while the scene balances humor with Rockwell’s characteristic understanding of childhood bravado, curiosity, friendship, and embarrassment.
