This is an exceptionally large (22" x 15") original lithographic plate from the landmark 1840s work Universal Palaeography (or Paléographie Universelle) by Joseph Balthazar Silvestre. This specific folio, Plate 236, provides a high-fidelity reproduction of a 15th-century Dutch Bible held at the Bibliothèque Royale de Paris.
The plate features the technical inscriptions "Silvestre Scrip." and "Cardon Sculp." at the base, identifying the master scribe and the engraver responsible for this exacting reproduction. The text, written in a crisp Gothic hand, captures the beginning of the Book of Exodus. It is highlighted by a grand, hand-colored illuminated initial "H" in cobalt blue and madder red, featuring fine internal floral filigree and elaborate foliate scrollwork extending into the margin.
Given its impressive scale and scholarly importance, this is a premiere example of 19th-century printing technology used to preserve medieval history. The paper is a heavy, cream-colored stock appropriate for its age.
