A pair of Stelvia Opalina Fiorentina horse head sculptures, hand-crafted in the Empoli region of Italy during the 1960s. Retaining both original Stelvia factory labels, these elegant opaline glass sculptures are fine examples of post-war Italian decorative glass from one of Tuscany's most respected manufacturers. Each horse head has been individually formed by hand in luminous white opaline glass, capturing the noble profile of the animal with elongated features, finely modelled ears and a flowing stylised mane. The smooth satin-like surface and softly translucent body create a subtle interplay of light, shifting from creamy white to delicate blue-grey tones depending upon the surrounding light. Unlike opaque milk glass, true opaline glass is created by introducing carefully balanced mineral opacifiers into molten crystal. This traditional process produces a glass that gently diffuses light while retaining remarkable depth and luminosity, giving the material its distinctive soft glow and porcelain-like appearance. Italian glassmakers refined the technique during the mid-twentieth century, producing some of Europe's finest decorative opaline glass. Produced under Stelvia's celebrated Opalina Fiorentina range, these sculptures exemplify the company's refined approach to modern decorative glass.
Condition Excellent vintage condition, presenting almost as new. Minor firing marks from manufacture are present but are barely visible. Both sculptures retain their original Stelvia Opalina Fiorentina labels.
