Historical Context: Around the turn of the century, wicker and rattan furniture were widely used in middle-class homes. They were considered light, airy, and hygienic and were often used in conservatories, drawing rooms, and on verandas. Side tables of this type served as tea or serving tables and were produced in specialized wickerwork workshops that processed the flexible material into elaborate ornamental forms.

Features: Decorative border of tightly twisted spiral volutes around the base of the table and on the legs. Lower round wooden shelf with a gallery-style rim, supported by four curved, wrapped legs.
Design: The table is in the tradition of late 19th-century Victorian wicker furniture. Characteristic features include the combination of a densely woven surface and open ornamentation, the braided borders along the contours, and the spirally rolled edges on the frame and feet.
