In 1878, Adolf Le Comte was appointed artistic advisor at the De Porceleyne Fles earthenware factory. Initially, he designed new Renaissance-style decorations for traditional Delft Blue. However, around 1890, he introduced this type of vase, simple in form and featuring only flow glazes. It was marketed under the name Berbas. Later followed Berbas Reflet Métallique, featuring metallic glazes. Like French art potters before him, Le Comte had drawn inspiration from Chinese and Japanese ceramics. On the underside is a mark of a small bottle with the initials TL. These initials refer to two owners, Joost Thooft & Abel Labouchere, who applied this mark together to, among other things, innovative earthenware produced at the Porceleyne Fles around 1900. This so-called Berbas earthenware and the more refined Reflet Métallique, made from domestic clays with ground sand, are covered with a metallic glaze that gives the object a kind of shimmer. The flamed effect was achieved by applying the glazes with a brush.
