An antique Chinese colorful pewter box with raised relief work and different-colored inlaid semi-precious stones to resemble floral buds.
A box in two halves has been manufactured from pewter. It has a dull silver finish and is very malleable. The box was decorated with applied leaves in the same material as the body. Semi-precious stones such as lapis, carnelian, jade and amethyst were set in these leaves. The lid is topped with a tiny lotus pod finial. The base has a brass rim along the lip.
The word CHINA has been stamped or etched into the base center.
MEASUREMENTS
4 3/8 in (11 cm) diameter x 4 in (10.2 cm) tall. Weighs 14.6 oz.
CONDITION
There are no breaks, cracks, chips, or repairs. There are small dents, especially on the base and the wall of the bottom half. There is wear on the surfaces from age and usage. The two halves fit together very well now but the metal is very malleable and might arrive a little out of round. It is very simple to (lightly) squeeze back into shape.
A remarkably tactile and visually rich piece, that pairs the quiet, soft patina of antique pewter with the vibrant, everlasting brilliance of its gemstone blooms.
