Antique English Painted Metal Deed Box
A remarkable English painted metal deed box bearing its original hand-painted inscription for Charles Pelham Lane, Esq., High Sheriff of Worcestershire, 1915–16. Rich in history and character, this early twentieth-century piece offers a rare connection to one of England’s oldest ceremonial offices.
Charles Pelham Lane of Moundsley Hall served as High Sheriff of Worcestershire during 1915–16, and this box was likely used for the secure storage and transport of important legal papers, official documents, or correspondence during his term. The original painted lettering remains beautifully preserved, while the aged surface has developed the rich patina and authentic wear that only more than a century of use can create.
Featuring a hinged lid, integrated carrying handle, and lockable design, the box remains both functional and highly decorative. Whether displayed in a library, study, office, or collected interior, it serves as a striking conversation piece while providing practical storage for letters, documents, photographs, or keepsakes.
Hand sourced in England, this one-of-a-kind deed box is a rare example of English civic history, combining provenance, craftsmanship, and enduring character.
