Measuring 49 inches wide by 72 inches long, this is a proper full-size coverlet, substantial enough to drape over a bed, sofa, or hang as a textile artwork.
Each rosette is individually hand-gathered and hand-stitched to its neighbors — a technique requiring patience and skill that was at the height of its popularity during the 1920s and 1930s, when women across America transformed fabric scraps, feed sacks, and worn clothing into objects of quiet beauty. Yo-yo quilts were commonplace in American bedrooms from the 1920s to the 1940s, fashioned from fabric scraps, old bed sheets, or leftover feed sacks — one of the most imaginative of 20th-century textiles. The fabrics here are a genuine time capsule — florals, stripes, checks, geometric prints, feedsack patterns, and novelty prints in blues, pinks, reds, yellows, greens, and creams, all typical of Depression-era cotton production.
