The generously scaled oval top is finished in richly patterned geometric marquetry, with warm mahogany, burlwood, and ebony woods laid in a rhythmic composition that adds movement without overwhelming the room. The table is supported by a sculptural double cylindrical pedestal base, substantial but well-balanced, allowing chairs to move easily around it while keeping the footprint visually clean. The South Loop Loft Restoration Atelier spent over 24 hours carefully refinishing this table, bringing it to near-perfect condition while preserving the integrity of the original marquetry and finish. Every detail was addressed with longevity in mind, so the table feels refined, stable, and ready to live in a finished interior—not just admired.

About the Designer:
Attributed to Paolo Portoghesi, this table reflects the thinking of an architect who approached furniture as part of the spatial experience, not as a standalone object.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Portoghesi was a central figure in Italian Postmodernism. While best known for his architectural work, he frequently designed custom furniture and interior elements for private commissions and site-specific projects. These pieces were created to respond to particular rooms and uses, often produced as one-off or limited works rather than commercial designs.

His furniture carries the same sensibility as his buildings: strong geometry, considered proportion, and forms that help organize how people gather in a space. Tables, especially, were conceived as focal points—objects meant to bring balance, rhythm, and a sense of permanence to an interior. Because much of this work was custom-made, attribution is based on design language and period context rather than branded production.

Condition: Conservation work was undertaken by the South Loop Loft Restoration Atelier over approximately 25 intentional hours.
The table was structurally stabilized and the surface carefully refinished in multiple stages, preserving the original marquetry while ensuring long-term durability.
A clear protective finish was applied to enhance depth without altering the character of the wood. The approach prioritized preservation over replacement, maintaining the integrity of the period materials.
Minor edge wear remains lightly visible along select corners, consistent with age. These areas were stabilized and integrated into the finish rather than overfilled, retaining the material authenticity of the piece while ensuring structural soundness.
The table is solid, balanced, and fully ready for placement. The top is removable from the base for transport and installation. See less
