Numbered and lettered blocks map out formations, quarters, and pathways in a symmetrical, almost modular composition — the kind of graphic design that reads beautifully as a standalone piece independent of its historical subject (a Roman military encampment). Two narrative vignette scenes of Roman soldiers and generals frame the diagram. Engraved and signed "J.V. Vianen del. et fecit" (Jan van Vianen), c.1690–1720. See less
