MCM Tage Andersen Brutalist Welded Wire Woven Mesh Candle Cones on Block Bases Style /7
Up for sale is a is an estate sale purchased set of stunning, Mid-Century Modern Brutalist Wire-Wrapped Pillars candle holders featuring cascading, hand-woven wire mesh cones rising out of heavy, industrial block bases. This statement piece beautifully captures the raw, organic aesthetic of 1960s–1970s metalwork, offering a striking play of shadow, texture, and light. Its design language shares strong characteristics with the fine woven ironwork of Danish artist Tage Andersen and the iconic kinetic installations of the Brutalist movement.
Tage Andersen: A renowned Danish artist, floral designer, and sculptor (born 1947) famous for creating surreal, organic, and brutalist-style metal/wire interior decorations.
There are seven distinct tapered mesh funnels attached to individual, patinated zinc/lead square blocks, connected by high-heat twisted metal rods. They can be used as candle holders, or decoration. There is no maker's mark on these, but I'm including a research picture showing Tage Andersen's work (see last photo). Tage Andersen's work is considered highly rare, exclusive, and sought-after, particularly outside of Scandinavia.
Andersen does not mass-produce his designs. Each sculptural vase, centerpiece, or candle holder is individually handcrafted in his Copenhagen studio workshop or made in collaboration with small local Danish artisan foundries. No two pieces are completely identical.
The intricate, layered, and coiled iron wire mesh showcases exceptional hand-worked craftsmanship. Beautiful brazed alloy details are visible at the junction points, highlighting its authentic, studio-crafted origins.
A gorgeous, natural aged patina with subtle oxidation that highlights the raw, unpolished, and industrial texture characteristic of the Brutalist movement.
Excellent vintage condition with no structural breaks to the wire matrix.
