Originally a cast iron Parisian balcony gate from circa 1900, the railing has been repurposed into a console base. Side returns and back rails were added to the base to support the two-inch-thick top. The stone is cream colored, with white and beige inclusions and shell impressions, offering a stark contrast to the oxidized dark brown base.

In the center of the iron is a pierced oval cartouche, consisting of a tall, fluted vase with a cascading floral bouquet intertwined with volutes and crinkled ribbon. Beading immediately encircles the imagery, with two more rings beyond, depicting husked grain with ribbon and margents of flowers. Large rinceaux span between the cartouche and the pilasters, accompanied by curled leaves, swags, more ribbon, and rosettes. Although originally a balcony railing, the elaborate Neoclassical motifs of the cast iron base make this console an important piece, making it a proper statement piece for a grand entry, landing, or library.
