This finely decorated box from the early 19th century is a beautiful example of traditional Chinese craftsmanship. Known as a presentation box, the original container would have been commissioned as a celebratory gift, filled with popular snacks like roasted melon seeds, dried fruit, and cinnamon-toasted soy beans.
The wooden box has an unusual, diamond-lozenge shape with inset panels of tightly woven bamboo and a glossy finish of red & black lacquer. The lacquered frame was then hand-painted with gilt brushwork of flower blossoms, trailing vines and butterflies - symbols of happiness and joy.
