Known as a fang deng, or square stool, this type of casual stool was used throughout the home - whether as a seat beside the table, pulled into the courtyard, or as an extra surface in the kitchen.

The stool dates to the late 19th century and is crafted of elmwood (yumu) with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, without the use of nails or screws. The square seat rests on four round legs, slightly splayed for stability and braced with straight stretcher bars. Gently faded from years of use, the rustic seat is ideal today as a side table, plant stand or occasional stool. See less
