The cylindrical shape of this antique Chinese vessel identifies it as a Qing-dynasty (1644-1911) hat stand, once used by a well-to-do gentleman to display his caps while not in use. Dated to the early 19th century, the ceramic form is beautifully glazed in the blue-and-white manner, brushed by hand with cobalt underglaze in a dark shade of indigo-blue.
The painted scene depicts two birds amid peony blossoms, a motif for the idiom "may husband and wife grow old together in harmony." A cluster of bamboo is painted on the obverse side, a motif for longevity and endurance. With its rich color and meaningful decoration, the slender vase makes the perfect gift for a wedding or anniversary.
