The piece showcases the signature stylistic hallmarks, thematic depth and material composition of Gia Loi's active working period in French Indochina.
The figure depicts a male laborer or carrier kneeling under the immense weight of a large sack, jar, or bundle hoisted upon his shoulder. It captures a striking sense of physical exertion, showing a strained facial expression with gritted teeth and dynamic muscular tension across the back and limbs.
Stylistically, the piece masterfully blends classical realism with the sleek, rounded contours characteristic of the Art Deco period. The smooth rendering of the anatomy contrasts with the heavy folds of the lower loincloth draping onto the base.
The corner facet of the polygonal base features the incised signature "Gia-Lợi".
The artist was an early to mid-20th-century sculptor tied to the artistic movements of the Hanoi School. He is heavily listed and widely recognized in estate auctions for his high-quality bronze busts of ethnic Southeast Asian people, rural scenes and animals.
This hollow-cast bronze was made using classic foundry methods. The interior walls show an unrefined, pitted cavity typical of sand- or lost-wax casting. It also shows substantial cuprite and malachite oxidation as powdery green and chalky white-blue encrustations. This natural aging verifies the authentic composition of the copper-alloy bronze and matches its mid-20th-century vintage timeframe. Accordingly, the exterior surface shows a rich, deep chocolate-brown patina with a glossy finish that has worn gracefully over time.
