Sourced in Provence, France, this exceptional mid-19th-century French Louis Philippe giltwood mirror embodies both the timeless elegance of French decorative arts and the extraordinary craftsmanship required to preserve them. Measuring 48.25 inches high by 26.25 inches wide, its refined proportions make it equally suited for an entryway, powder room, bedroom, or displayed above a mantel or console. This is an authentic period mirror dating to the Louis Philippe era, not a later reproduction. Acquired after decades of use with extensive structural damage and significant losses to the carved ornamentation, the mirror presented an opportunity to preserve an original piece of French history through an ambitious restoration rather than replace it. The restoration was entrusted to master artisans specializing in traditional French giltwood and genuine gold leaf restoration. Over the course of the project, substantial sections of the frame were meticulously reconstructed by hand, including the entire central crest, corner ornamentation, and numerous decorative elements throughout the frame. Every replacement was carefully modeled to complement the surviving original carving, preserving the proportions, balance, and visual language of the original design while ensuring the long-term structural integrity of the frame. Following the structural restoration, the frame was traditionally prepared and finished in genuine gold leaf by master gilders, resulting in a rich, luminous surface that reflects the warmth and depth associated with fine French giltwood. Rather than producing the appearance of a newly manufactured object, the restoration was carried out with the goal of honoring the mirror's age, craftsmanship, and enduring character. The original mirror plate was no longer serviceable and has been replaced with a new custom-cut mirror, providing exceptional clarity while allowing this remarkable period frame to continue serving its intended purpose for generations to come. More than simply a decorative mirror, this piece represents the successful preservation of an authentic mid-19th-century French antique through hundreds of hours of highly specialized craftsmanship. It stands today as both a beautiful Louis Philippe mirror and a testament to the enduring value of traditional restoration techniques. The final photograph documents the mirror prior to restoration and illustrates the extraordinary level of craftsmanship invested in preserving this authentic French period frame.
