Capture the serene, misty essence of the New England coast with this large-scale oil on canvas board painting by renowned American artist Charles C. Gruppe (1928–2020). A prolific New England artist, Gruppe became widely celebrated for his atmospheric, semi-abstract harbor scenes depicting iconic coastal locations such as Gloucester, Cape Cod, and Maine. His work is characterized by elegant, gestural brushwork and a sophisticated, muted palette that evokes a sense of timeless calm.
This exceptional piece titled "Harbour" comes with distinguished provenance from the Zantman Art Galleries in Carmel, California. Established in 1959 by Johan and Gertrude Zantman, Zantman Art Gallery holds a significant place in history as Carmel’s first commercial gallery and remains one of the longest-running and most respected art institutions on the West Coast. Known for its unwavering commitment to integrity and quality, the gallery has long been a cornerstone for serious art collectors, representing both emerging talents and established figures in the contemporary art scene.
The painting was created in mid to late 1960s. It is housed in its original gallery-selected frame, complete with the authentic Zantman Art Galleries label on the reverse, which serves as a testament to its origin and professional acquisition.
