James Champney (MA/NY 1843-1903). A very good work of an older woman in a chair. The work is of a seemingly simple subject, but it is VERY well done. It is a gem of a painting. The work is oil/canvas (appears to be laid to board). It is signed and dated (appears to be 1872). It is presented in very good giltwood frame.
Champney studied in Europe in the late 1860's before returning to the US and established a studio in Boston. He was likely exposed to the beginnings of the Impressionist movement and was credited with being among the first Americans to embrace the spirit of Impressionism. The date of this work would mark a period where a nascent Impressionist movement may have influenced his work. His landscape works also reflected the Hudson River School influence which was taking hold of the American artistic landscape at the time. All in all, this is a very good painting of some historical importance.
