About the Artist
John Hardwicke Lewis was a British painter and illustrator active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Hyderabad, India, he first studied with his father, artist Frederic Christian Lewis, and later trained in Paris under French painter Thomas Couture. Lewis worked as a newspaper illustrator in San Francisco from approximately 1875 to 1885 before returning to Europe, where he became known for portraits, landscapes and genre scenes. His work was exhibited in London, and examples are held in British public collections. See less
