A modern black-and-white composition by Czech avant-garde photographer Jaroslav Rossler exemplifies his groundbreaking experiments with abstraction and photomontage. Created circa 1964 and later printed under the Prague House of Photography in 1991. The work layers geometric forms, architectural fragments, and organic motifs - such as silhouetted trees -into a surreal, spatially ambiguous arrangement. Rossler's mastery of tonal contrast, spatial distortion, and unconventional cropping transforms familiar elements into a complex visual puzzle, reflecting his pioneering role in European modernist photography. As with much of Rossler's later work, this image bridges the experimental energy of the interwar avant-garde with a mature, refined sense of composition, making it both historically significant and visually arresting.
From a private estate in Birmingham, MI. Dimensions: 15.25"h x 12.25"w x .75"d (framed). In good vintage condition. Full condition reports are available upon request.
Jaroslav Rossler (1902-1990) was a pioneering Czech avant-garde photographer, widely regarded as one of the most innovative figures in early 20th-century European photography. Associated with the Czech Devetsil group and deeply influenced by Constructivism, Cubism, and Futurism, Rossler developed a groundbreaking visual language blending photograms, photomontage, and abstract composition. His work has been exhibited in major international venues, including the Musee de Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the National Gallery in Prague. Rossler's photographs are held in prominent institutional collections worldwide, and his experimental approach continues to influence generations of photographers and contemporary artists.
