A striking early 19th century English Regency family portrait, measuring 39"H x 33"W in the original giltwood frame, executed in the manner of Sir John Watson Gordon (British, 1788–1864) unsigned
The composition captures a mother and her three children — a daughter and two sons — arranged in an intimate pyramidal grouping and dressed in the height of Regency fashion: the mother in a plumed lace bonnet and dark silk gown with a gold watch chain at her waist, the daughter in an empire-waisted gown with coral necklace and drop earring, and the two boys in dark tailored jackets with wide lace collars. The rendering of fabric, lace, and jewelry reflects the elegant, refined portraiture style associated with Gordon's circle and the broader Scottish-English portrait tradition of the period.

Held in the original giltwood frame, the painting presents in good, minor-wear condition, with minor craquelure throughout and some surface discoloration and darkening consistent with age. The canvas has been professionally relined, with minor touch-up present throughout. A wonderful example of Regency-era portraiture with genuine presence and history. See less
