A Documented Piece of American Glass History: This exceptional mid-19th-century lamp is a confirmed product of the American Glass Company (also known as the Congress Street Glass Factory) in South Boston. Founded by Patrick Slane, this factory was renowned for its high-quality flint glass and innovative manufacturing techniques.
Provenance & Literature: This specific "Inverted Diamond and Rib" pattern is documented and illustrated in the definitive reference work The Glass Industry in South Boston by Joan E. Kaiser. The pattern features a beautifully blown-molded font with a distinct internal diamond optic and vertical ribbing, joined to a pressed circular base.
The Burner: Unlike common whale oil lamps of the era, this piece is fitted with a period-correct, high-quality double-tube fluid/camphene burner. These "V" shaped burners were designed for the volatile burning fluids of the 1850s.
Hardware: The brass burner screws securely into the original threaded collar (a superior fit to common plaster-set collars).
Snuffer Cap: Includes one original brass extinguisher/snuffer cap on its original chain (one missing).
