This oil on canvas depicts a very high-quality fragment of Moses Saved from the Waters, attributed to Francesco Curradi (1570-1661), the most important exponent of 17th-century Florentine devotional painting; no authentication is available. Florence's taste for luxury is evident in the quality of the draperies and especially in the symbols, such as the lily, that decorate the elegant robes. The Bible recounts that, to escape Pharaoh's persecution, Moses' mother abandoned the child in a basket on the Nile. He was later found and adopted by Pharaoh's daughter, who had gone to the river with her maids. Note a third figure in the upper left, looking toward us, breaking the fourth wall; presumably this is a self-portrait of the painter himself or a portrait of the patron.
