This striking torso form exemplifies Larocque's celebrated fusion of figuration and abstraction, its layered, textured surface evoking both the solidity of classical statuary and the raw immediacy of modern expression. The hand-built composition is richly worked with ridges, fissures, and embedded patterns, punctuated by earthy ochre, cream, and deep brown tones. Jean-Pierre Larocque (1953- ) is an internationally acclaimed Canadian ceramicist and sculptor, celebrated for his innovative approach to figurative and abstract forms. His work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries worldwide, including the Muse national des beaux-arts du Quebec, the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, and the Gardiner Museum. Larocque has been the recipient of numerous awards, notably the Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence in the Fine Crafts, one of Canada's most prestigious distinctions in the arts. His sculptures are held in prominent public and private collections across North America and Europe, recognized for their distinctive textural surfaces, architectural presence, and emotive resonance.
