An exceptional example of luxury decorative arts, this early 20th-century malachite box is a striking statement of elegance, craftsmanship, and refinement. Beautifully proportioned and remarkably substantial, the box is clad throughout in richly figured natural malachite, one of the world's most prized ornamental stones.
The lid is particularly impressive, featuring a carefully arranged mosaic of segmented malachite panels. Each section displays its own distinctive banding and swirling concentric patterns, creating a mesmerizing landscape of vivid emerald and deep green tones. The meticulous matching of the stone highlights the skill of the craftsman and transforms the lid into a work of art in its own right.
Opening the box reveals a luxurious white onyx-lined interior, providing a beautiful contrast to the vibrant malachite exterior. The combination of these two highly prized natural stones evokes the grandeur of European luxury objects produced for discerning collectors during the early twentieth century. The base has a wonderful frosted transparency with natural veining to the onyx (this is not cracking line).
Measuring 6 inches wide, 4 inches deep, and 1.25 inches high, this extraordinary box is equally suited for use as a jewelry casket, desk accessory, or display object. Adding further distinction, the hinge and supporting framework are crafted from hallmarked 800 gold washed continental silver, a mark of quality frequently associated with fine European workmanship. The substantial construction is evident in its impressive weight of approximately 1 pound 8 ounces. Good antique condition with only one small chip to the exterior right side lid and to one inside corner. Light surface wear. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
A remarkable piece of provenance accompanies the box: the original 1966 sales receipt from the renowned New York antiques firm A La Vieille Russie. Founded in 1851 and still operating in Manhattan today, A La Vieille Russie is internationally respected for handling some of the finest European antiques, jeweled objects, and works of art. The receipt records a purchase price of $460 in 1966.
With its stunning natural malachite, silver-mounted construction, documented provenance, and timeless sophistication, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire a museum-quality decorative object of exceptional beauty and character.
