A charming and elegant example of Edwardian desk accessories, this fine English sterling silver and crystal inkwell was crafted in Birmingham in 1903 and embodies the refined taste and exceptional workmanship of the period. Combining sparkling cut crystal with beautifully executed sterling silver mounts, the piece offers both practical function and timeless decorative appeal.
The removable inkwell features a beautifully faceted crystal body that catches and reflects light from every angle, creating a brilliant display of sparkle and clarity. It is fitted with a substantial sterling silver collar and hinged lid, both finely crafted and proportioned to complement the geometric lines of the crystal. The silver lid opens smoothly to reveal the original ink reservoir, while the heavy silver mounts add a pleasing sense of quality and permanence.
Measuring approximately 5 inches wide, 2.5 inches deep, and 2.75 inches high overall, the crystal inkwell itself measures 1.75 inches wide and 2.25 inches high. Its compact scale makes it ideal for display while still retaining a strong visual presence. Good antique condition with some spot ink stains to the interior of the inkwell and a few small indents to the tray. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
The inkwell rests within an elegant sterling silver tray raised on delicate feet. The tray is beautifully shaped and provides a graceful presentation, transforming a functional writing accessory into a sophisticated decorative object suitable for a desk, library, or study. The tray alone weighs approximately 31 grams, with additional sterling silver contained within the substantial collar and lid of the inkwell.
Whether displayed as part of a writing collection, incorporated into a traditional desk arrangement, or admired as a standalone decorative object, this beautiful 1903 Birmingham sterling silver and crystal inkwell offers a wonderful combination of craftsmanship, elegance, and historic charm. A superb example of Edwardian silver that remains as attractive today as it was more than a century ago.
