A striking example of early twentieth-century gentleman’s desk and smoking-room accessories, this circa 1910 silverplate cigar and cigarette box combines bold architectural design with exceptional functionality. Its deeply ribbed exterior creates a dramatic visual effect, catching and reflecting light across every surface, while the elegant central handle adds both practicality and a distinctive decorative presence.
The box possesses a wonderfully substantial feel, weighing just under three pounds, and is beautifully proportioned for display on a desk, library table, or bar. The clean geometric lines and sophisticated ribbed design anticipate the streamlined aesthetics that would later define the Art Deco period, giving the piece a timeless and versatile appeal.
Opening the box reveals a warm wood-lined interior fitted with two separate storage compartments, each accessed by its own lifting lid. This thoughtful arrangement originally allowed for the organized storage of cigars and cigarettes while protecting their condition. Today, the compartments are equally suited for storing desk accessories, correspondence, collectibles, jewelry, or other treasured items.
Measuring approximately 8 inches wide, 6 inches deep, and 3.25 inches high, this handsome box offers an eye-catching presentation. Good antique condition, there is wear to the silverplate revealing a warmer golden tone from the underlying copper metal. Small areas of tarnish and metal oxidation under the handle area. A small indents to the top lid. There are a few wood losses at the top of the interior panels. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Elegant, functional, and undeniably stylish, this antique silverplate tobacco box captures the sophistication of the Edwardian era and remains a superb addition to a traditional study, gentleman’s library, smoking room, or curated collection of fine antique accessories.
